Home-schooling after coronavirus

21/8/2020

There's no question, the pandemic has been tough on all of us, but for some parents it's given them the perfect opportunity to try home education after year's of wondering 'what if'.

If you've found home-schooling really worked for your family and you want to keep going in September when the school's go back, you may be wondering what next.

Taking the plunge and starting to home educate is a frightening step for many families. You may wonder if you're making the right decision, how your children will make friends, and what you'll say to friends and family.

Most of us have been there, so you're not alone! Don't panic, take each day at a time, and remind yourself of the reasons you're taking this step and how it's going to benefit you and your child.

For practical advice on de-registering from school (which in most cases takes nothing more than a letter to school saying your child isn't coming back) have a look at the Educational Freedom page about deregistration. There's lots of other useful information on there too.

Once you've made the decision to home-school your child(ren) and you want to connect with other home educators locally, a good place to start is Facebook. Search for 'home education' and the name of your local area, and see what comes up. It can take a while to find groups, but if you ask a question in the first one you join, that will usually lead to other suggestions from members.

There aren't many groups meeting at the moment because of the coronavirus, but there are a few informal outdoor activities, and many of these are discussed in the Facebook groups for that area so it really is the best place to start.
